2010 NZ TOUR DIARY
Sep 02, 2010
August 2010 – Laurel Oak had the pleasure of leading a ‘Laurel Oak/Tony Noonan’ NZ Tour Group in August 2010.
The trip was a raging success with a total of 18 ‘tourists’ spending a fantastic week travelling the NZ horse country, visiting the top NZ studs, stallions and training facilities. While the tour had a ‘racing theme’ there was also time for fishing, golf & sampling the terrific food and wine that New Zealand has to offer.
These mid-year NZ tours began many years ago when we felt it would be a good opportunity to inspect our yearling purchases from the Karaka sales and see how they were progressing in their early stages of training.
This years tour took in visits and stallion parades at; Cambridge, Westbury, Brighthill, Waikato, The Oaks and Windsor Studs.
Our private tours meant the group was able to get up close and personal with stallions such as Zabeel, Keeper, Pins, O’reilly, Savabeel, Perfectly Ready, Darci Brahma, Swiss Ace, Faltaat, Mastercraftsman, Thorn Park, Falkirk & Volksraad, plus many many more.
We would like to thank all the studs for their hospitality during our visits, which went well and truly beyond expectations.
Inspections of our 2yo’s took place at Tony Pike’s stables at the Cambridge training centre. Here our group was escorted to the track, to watch our 2010 purchases, the Oratorio(IRE)/Forelsa colt and Pins/Roseario filly work under-saddle. We were also able to get a behind the scenes look at how Tony Pike conditions the horses under his care.
Aside from the ‘racing activities’ there was plenty of time for fun and games.
A must for any tour in NZ is a day of fishing on Lake Taupo. On our privately charted cruiser, the fisherman in the group spent the day afloat this magnificent lake. While fishing was the main attraction, there was also the traditional Clay Shooting competition off the back of the boat, this year won by Rob Ward.
Another highlight of the tour was lunch at the world-renowned Huka Lodge. While the whole property is breathtaking in itself, our party was treated to the best food NZ has to offer and no one left disappointed.
A major part of making a successful tour is having a tremendous group of ‘tourists’, and this was certainly the case for NZ ’10. Everybody had a wonderful time and have memories, and friendships, that will last a lifetime.
We would like to thank everybody who made the tour possible. A special thank you goes to New Zealand Thoroughbred Marketing and local Taupo based Bloodstock Agent, Paul Beamish and his wife Sherryl, for their hospitality and help throughout the tour.
Future tours Laurel Oak are currently organising include; the 2010 Hong Kong International Races (including a golf extension to Mission Hills Golf Resort) and the 2011 US Laurel Oak/Tony Noonan Racing and Stud Tour.
