Like a shot out of a cannon, Our Free Spirit blows em' away at Yarra Valley
Feb 06, 2021
After two very narrow defeats when nabbed on the line, Our Free Spirit broke through for a deserved win at Yarra Valley this afternoon where he produced his best late in what was ultimately a dominant win for the Mornington-based combination of Tony and Jake Noonan.
Although the win was very strong, things were a bit concerning for connections the field cornered for home and Our Free Spirit spotted the leader a five length lead.
“I thought we were in a fair bit of trouble at the top of the straight but Jake knows this horse so well, and knew he’d just keep coming once he got into the clear,” said stable Foreman, Tom Noonan.
“When Nathan Dunn’s horse came around us, he just took the sit and took a breather. It gave him that strong finish at the end which we’d just been missing in our last two starts.
“That’s why he’s a Group 1 winning jockey.”
Jumping evenly from barrier 5 in the field of 10 in the 1200m affair, Jake initially looked to take the 4-year-old Unencumbered gelding forward before electing to take the sit as a leading trio fanned the front.
Once settled behind the wall of horse, Our Free Spirit was travelling comfortably around the tight-turning Yarra Valley circuit before Jake was forced to come 4-wide into the straight to make his run.
While coming wide, Our Free Spirit was spotting Red Jewels (ridden by stable apprentice Harry Grace) a five length lead as the leader had looked to slip the field before Jake balanced Our Free Spirit up to rocket down the centre of the track, coming home 2-to-their-1 for a well deserved win.
The victory was the second of Our Free Spirit’s racing career from 14 starts and took his earnings to $53,200.
